Marathon is Bungie's extraction shooter, out since March 5, 2026 on PC (Steam), PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S, with crossplay and cross-save. It isn't the Marathon of 1994: you play a Runner on Tau Ceti IV, drop into a zone solo, in a duo or in a crew of three, and keep only what you get out with.
The zones are Perimeter, Dire Marsh, its night version Night Marsh, and Outpost. Cryo Archive is the endgame zone, with Vaults 01 to 07 and the Compiler, and it opens on a weekly schedule, Thursday to Monday at the moment. Six factions give contracts, Arachne, CyberAcme, MIDA, NuCaloric, Sekiguchi and Traxus, each with its own ranks and unlocks, and Codex titles such as Zonewarden, with its seven objectives, carry over between seasons.
The Nightfall Refresh of October 6, 2026 reset Runner levels, faction levels, vault contents and zone access for everyone: Runner levels and faction ranks start over with each such wipe, while titles stay. Bungie's roadmap puts the next update, Symbiosis, with the first permanent PvE mode, on December 8, 2026.
